A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terrorist designation and legal charges
Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.
Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.
Court proceedings and cross-border allegations
Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.
In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.
Historical background and organizational structure
Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.
Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.
Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.
Prior legal cases and global responses
A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.
The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.
“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
