Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Secure First Wins After Player Arrests
The Miami Heat put up 86 first-half scores versus the Grizzlies
Miami Heat claimed a decisive 146 to 114 win over the Grizzlies in their initial NBA game after player Rozier was arrested for suspected unlawful sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a extensive federal investigation into illegal gambling. Both men deny the claims.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up 86 first-half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later stated Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is important to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."
The Trail Blazers additionally won their first game after the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 victory over the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
Silver also mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and investigating."
