Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became public.
The economist stated in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and anticipate following their advancement".
Summers, who previously led the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public emails revealed that the official exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for accused trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it accepted his choice to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the governing body," OpenAI stated.
Legislative Background
This news comes after the two houses of the US legislature voted on recently to approve a legislation that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will then proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. The President has indicated he intends to sign the measure, after modifying his position on the subject following objections from his followers.
Message Details
A batch of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the Congressional committee last week mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those individuals.
The communications indicated that Summers and Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often trying to link the official to prominent global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were released with the wider community, he said he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised decision to maintain communicating with Mr Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to restore confidence and mend relationships with the persons most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He headed the university from the early 2000s and remains a academic there. When announcing his step-down from public duties earlier on this week, he indicated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following his announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in DC where Summers was a prominent member, verified that Summers was not connected with the organization.
The former official became part of the leadership of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its chief executive the company leader.
