Gas Detonation Takes 3 Carabinieri During Eviction Operation in the Verona Area
Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The detonation occurred as police and firefighters approached the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.
Investigation Developments
One male and one female were arrested at the site and another man who ran away after the incident was found soon after. All three have been transported to the hospital.
The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene displayed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the past.
Property Situation
The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents triggered the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Casualties and Damage
The wounded by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.
He believed the explosion had taken place on a level above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told Italian media, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
